Some Great Advice

The Design Observer has a great post titled, “The Top 10 Things They Never Taught Me in Design School.” While this proports to be about working in the design industry, I think it is really applicable to anyone in the “creative” fields, of which I include information architecture. It is really, really, really worth a read if you are under 40 and wondering about your career. Heck, I think it is really, really worth a read if you are over 40 and looking back.

Of my favorites:

3. If everything is equally important, then nothing is important.

7. When you throw your weight around, you usually fall off balance.

9. It all comes down to output.

10. The rest of the world counts.

I think that the IT field is becoming more and more intertwined with the design world. Same concepts, slightly different (although gradually merging) toolsets. If you are interested in the IT field, I would get to know more about design concepts. You will be surprised how applicable they are.
